Bath’s Historic Venues – Truly Magical & Iconic Venues in this Beautiful City

by Michelle

Bath’s Historic Venues are such an iconic part of the city’s history and would make the perfect backdrop to any style and size of wedding. They include the award winning Roman Baths & Pump Room, the Assembly Rooms, the Victorian Art Gallery and the Guildhall.

The Roman Baths are steeped in 2,000 years of history and their sunrise and sunset ceremonies offer you a fantastic opportunity to marry in the open air at the water’s edge whilst also remaining undercover, safe from the unpredictable British weather.

For more about what each of these magical venues have to offer, we’ll pass you straight over to the wedding team.

Tell us about your venue

Bath’s Historic Venues are a collection of unique and historic venues at the centre of the World Heritage city of Bath. The Roman Baths and Pump Room, the Assembly Rooms, Guildhall and Victoria Art Gallery are all ideally placed within short walking distance of one another – some of our clients choose to use more than one of the venues for their wedding celebrations.

The Roman Baths and Pump Room are available for sunrise and sunset wedding ceremonies, fitting around the opening hours of the museum and restaurant. The Roman Baths, with its flickering torches, steaming waters, and 2000 year old paving, is a particularly memorable place to exchange vows.

The Assembly Rooms are an elegant city centre venue, steeped in history. The venue has played host to Jane Austen and Charles Dickens, and features in their works. Today, this lovely Georgian building is ideal for weddings of 80 to 500 guests.

The Banqueting Room at the Guildhall, with its sumptuous Georgian interior can accommodate 180 guests for a wedding reception. It is housed in the same building as Bath Register Office, but may also be used in conjunction with the Victoria Art Gallery, which is just next door.

For art lovers, the Victoria Art Gallery is an inspired choice. Up to 100 guests may be accommodated here for a ceremony, followed by drinks and canapés. You can marry by your favourite painting in the Upper Gallery, which houses the permanent collection, or choose an exhibition from our programme which suits your taste in the Lower Gallery.

Do you offer civil marriage and civil partnership ceremonies?

Yes, we offer civil marriage and civil partnership ceremonies in all our venues.

Do couples & their wedding party have exclusive use of your venue?

The Assembly Rooms also house the Fashion museum, so during the day there is shared used of the foyer and toilets, but the rooms you hire are yours exclusively and you can move between them without entering public areas.

The Banqueting Room at the Guildhall is in a public building, but the rooms you hire will only be accessed by your guests and suppliers. In the evening the building is closed to the public.

Tell us just a little about any wedding packages you offer

Our wedding packages vary each year – keep an eye out for the latest ones on our website.

Do you have in-house catering, or preferred suppliers or are couples free to choose their own caterers?

At the Roman Baths, Pump Room and Assembly Rooms all catering is provided by our contracted caterers Searcys. Searcys cater in a number of prestigious venues including The Gherkin, The Barbican and Blenheim Palace and have been established since 1847. They pride themselves on being flexible and have a range of wedding packages available. If you have something specific in mind, they will be happy to put together a bespoke package for you.

At the Guildhall and the Victoria Art Gallery we operate a listed caterer scheme, where you may choose from a selection of caterers or choose your own.

Can couples supply their own alcohol for the evening? Is there a corkage fee?

Searcys have a corkage fee, and at the Guildhall and Victoria Art Gallery you are free to supply your own alcohol.

Are couples completely free to choose their own wedding entertainment & do you have a specific sound system?

Our Events Team are able to make recommendations or suggest suppliers who have worked previously at our venues. You are free to choose your own suppliers, but due to the historic nature of the venues there a few restrictions to protect the buildings and we will advise you accordingly.

Do you offer accommodation on site? If so, for how many guests?

We don’t have accommodation, but being right in the city centre there is a whole host of accommodation within walking distance, to suit a variety of budgets.

Do you have an in-house wedding co-ordinator?

Our team has extensive experience of holding and organising weddings, and will offer hands-on professional expertise to guide you through the most suitable venue options to match your vision of the day. Feedback from our wedding clients frequently praises the enthusiasm and professionalism of our staff.

We will work closely with you and your wedding suppliers in the time leading up to your wedding to ensure that nothing is left to chance. On the day itself, a dedicated Function Manager will ensure that your wedding runs seamlessly and that you can relax and enjoy your day.

We can also provide those little extras for you at no extra charge, such as an easel to display your seating plan, a PA for speeches, and even witnesses for your ceremony if required.

How far in advance can couples or their wedding stylist, florist etc have access to the venue in order to decorate it?

At the Roman Baths and Pump Room there is limited preparation time, as the museum closes at 5pm and sunset ceremonies commence at 7.30pm. Sunrise ceremonies take place at 8.30am, and you can have access at 7.30am.

At the Assembly Rooms, you can have access from 8am on the day of your wedding, or may hire the venue the day before at 50% of our standard room hire rate.

Access to the Guildhall should be negotiated and will depend on other events.

Do you have gardens or an outdoor area for wedding photographs?

Our venues offer stunning photo opportunities, and are also non weather dependent. As city centre venues we have limited outdoor space but the Roman Baths, Victoria Art Gallery and Guildhall are very close to Parade Gardens which are a popular photo location, and the Assembly Rooms is close to The Circus and The Royal Crescent.

What’s your best advice to couples when choosing their perfect wedding venue?

It is really important to have a showround with the team before making your booking, and to ask as many questions as possible.

Let the team know if there is something that you have always dreamed of, so they can suggest the most suitable venue for you.

Any finally, what are your favourite moments from previous wedding you’ve been involved with?

One of our favourite weddings was a 17 hour affair! It included a Sikh religious ceremony, a civil ceremony, a British modern wedding breakfast, and finally a curry buffet and bhangra disco. The colours, sounds and tastes were all amazing, and we were all pleasantly exhausted by the end of the day!
