Gemma and Nic’s winter barn wedding combined their love of this special season with all that’s romantic about this time of year. Think flickering candles and sparkling fairy lights, both are effortlessly atmospheric and utterly beautiful and echo the seasonal vibe wonderfully well.
Barn weddings lend themselves to laid back, relaxed celebrations and Gemma and Nic fell in love with their venue, the enchanting Owen House Wedding Barn as soon as they saw it. As you can see their decorations, flowers and cake were the perfect fit for this delightfully understated venue.
Pixie at Pixie Abbott Photography captured the relaxed spontaneity of the day so well and we love how she made use of all the different elements of the venue, both inside and out in a gorgeous collection of images.
We’ll hand you straight over to Gemma now to tell us more.

What was the style of your wedding?
There was no particular ‘colour theme’ to our wedding but our main focus was to create a warm festive atmosphere by using twinkling fairy lights and flickering candlelight to create a romantic winter wedding.
We were also determined to add our personality to the wedding, we feel we did this through the flowers, favours, lighting, the cake details and the music we chose.
How did you make your day feel really personal to you as a couple?
Our day was honestly all we could have dreamed of, we put so much time and effort into the finer details but on the day, the atmosphere was warm and relaxed. Lot’s of laughter and clinking of glasses, I remember stepping back a few times just to absorb the day.
All our suppliers were also very carefully chosen, such as our fantastic florist – Living Colour floral design, our fabulous videographer – Alex Kirwin, our cake maker – Cakes by Donna etc and our epic photographer Pixie, who has such a kind, warm personality, she captured our day perfectly and we can’t thank her enough for that.
Nothing was too much trouble she went above and beyond to create our dream wedding journey. Our photos are full of love, vibrant colours, fun, smiles and happiness that was shared on our special day.
How did you decide on your venue?
When winter arrived in 2018, we realised how much we love this time of year, we also got engaged in the French Alps so felt a winter wedding would be perfect. Whilst searching on Instagram for venues, Owen House Wedding barn popped up and jumped out at me.
I had never even heard of this venue. I was so intrigued and luckily there was an opening day that month. Myself, Nic and our parents decided to visit. As soon as we walked through the doors we fell in love. We love how the barn has maintained it’s rustic and countryside charm.
Tell us about your wedding outfits
I was quite open minded when it came to picking my dress, I always thought I would choose something lacey/crochet. I found a beautiful intimate wedding dress boutique called to ‘To love and to Cherish’ in Ashbourne. We had such a gorgeous day, where Emily Walker, the shop owner made us all feel very special and welcome.
I didn’t expect to find my dress on the first outing, I just wanted to have this experience with my Mum and sister whilst my sister was home for the weekend because she lives in Scotland. I tried on about 12 dress’s of every shape and realised I wasn’t going to find my dress.
Every ‘boho’ dress I tried on were all absolutely beautiful but I almost felt like I was wearing a white maxi dress, I didn’t feel like a bride. I then realised I hadn’t tried any plain dresses on. There was a dress peeking out from all the rest on the rail…no detail, no lace just pure Mikardo satin with an off the shoulder neckline by Nicola Anne Bridal.
I remember having my head down whilst Emily was fastening the buttons up the back and when I lifted my head and looked in the mirror, I had a very special fuzzy feeling and realised, this is the dress I want to marry Nic in. Emily and her team are amazing and I can’t thank her enough for her time and efforts in helping me to find my dream dress.
The bridesmaid dresses were a mulled red wine colour, as my dress was plain, I thought it would be nice for the bridesmaids to have a lace detail. The bridesmaids looked absolutely amazing.
Choosing Nic’s suit was quite easy, we knew we wanted a fitted style and found him the perfect suit on Moss Bros. It was navy with a black check detail with a contrast mustard lining, teamed with a pair of brown grenson brougues. We also decided to match his tie and pocket square colour to the bridesmaid dresses. He looked perfect. The best men also wore the same suits. They all looked epic.
What was your standout moment of your day?
I absolutely loved the ceremony. Everything about it was so special.
What are your top tips for other couples planning their wedding?
To spend as much time on the day with your new husband/wife as you can, keep checking in with each other throughout the day. We spent most of the day together and we loved it.
I think Newlyweds can put too much pressure on themselves to ‘mingle’. Obviously we socialised with our loved ones but we felt we wanted to keep our connection at the heart of the day and I’m so glad we did, let’s face it…the day is about you as a couple so do it your way.
