Tell us a little about yourself and your business

Hi! I’m Ellen and I own Vintage Flair – a vintage tableware hire company specialising in beautiful, luxury vintage pieces. I’m not really a chinzy, mis-matched vintage lover, more an afternoon tea at the Ritz kinda girl – all of my teacups have a matching saucer and my cake stands have matching tiers – some things belong together.

My collection is made up of gold gilt fine bone china, silver plate silverware, crystal glasses and white lace linens. The Vintage Flair mantra has always been that each piece in the collection has to be good enough for the top table. Vintage Flair launched in August 2009, on my wedding day – my first wedding!

What motivated you to start your business?

Before I got married, I’d always planned to have children and knew I wouldn’t want to continue my full time job as a Food Development Manager as it involved long hours and travel. I set up Vintage Flair with a good friend, to allow us to be self-employed mums and leave the corporate world behind.

Tell us a little more about the day to day activities of your business

It’s very varied and also seasonal. During the summer I’m either packing up orders, styling wedding tables or catching up on admin. Spring is mostly sending out quotes, meeting clients, organising styled shoots and supplying tea parties.Winter is still busy but mainly with tea parties (baby showers, christenings etc) and a sprinkling of weddings.

 If our readers were to order from you, what can they expect?

Besides a 5* service, clients can expect to receive the best quality vintage crockery, sparkling silver plate cutlery and gleaming vintage glasses. My collection is perfect in quality and although its genuine vintage, it looks as god as new.

How can couples judge if a company is the right fit for their wedding?

I’d highly recommend meeting a supplier in person or chat to them on the phone and see how you get on. It’s important that you are confident your supplier ‘gets’ you and your style and if you’re not sure the supplier does ‘get’ you then keep searching for the right one to click. The last thing you want on your wedding day is the worry of a supplier not fulfilling your requirements.

What are your favourite moments from previous weddings you’ve been involved with?

My favourite moment from the first wedding I supplied would be styling the tables for my own wedding and launch of Vintage Flair!

I love every wedding I’ve supplied and I think my favourite moment is when I get sent the wedding photos, along with a glowing thank you card. It’s the best feeling to know you’ve contributed to someone’s wedding day and they loved the elements you supplied.

The bigger picture – does your business offer goods/services outside of the wedding world? Tell us more

Yes, I supply lots of private tea parties, dinner parties, corporate events and filming. My teacups have appeared on Great British Bake off and have been back stage at the Royal Variety Performance – They’ve met far more celebs than I have!

What have you got planned for the next 12 months?

Now my youngest has started school I can work full time on the business and therefore take on more bookings. I’m adding more silverware and glassware to the collection as the champagne saucers and cutlery sets have been really popular this year. I’m also planning on supplying more events in surrey as I can now deliver further afield.

And finally, what or who inspires you and why?

Hmm that’s a tricky one as there are so many amazing wedding suppliers at the moment. From a business point of view I’d have to say Lisa Johnson from Just Own This. She’s a fantastic business coach who has motivated me to push my business forward. From a competitor point of view I love The Vintage Table in Perth, Australia. They have some of the prettiest vintage crockery and have styled some fabulous tea parties.

From a personal point of view, my husband and 2 boys inspire me to work hard because as long as I am my own boss, I determine my work hours and get to be the one who picks them up from school and take them to the beach during the school holidays.
