Fox & Owl Photography – Stunning Documentary Wedding Photography

by Michelle

Fox & Owl have a wonderfully relaxed approach to their wedding photography. Armed with their trusty cameras and a variety of lenses they aim to record and capture all your big day’s stand out moments, tender glances and everything in between as honestly as they possibly can.

Fox & Owl’s approach towards photography is that of storytellers, blending into the background in order to capture your day as naturally and unobtrusively as possible. Their signature style is contemporary and considered and the resulting images are wonderfully natural and timeless. Over to Chloe now to tell us more.

Tell us a little about yourselves and your business

Hi I’m Chloé! The fuzzy faced man stood next to me in the picture—that’s Martyn.

We are partners in life and work… and together we make up the main team behind photography and design brand, Fox & Owl.

We shoot weddings, elopements, couples and also work with other wedding brands. Our style is inspired by old, traditional photography techniques but delivered with a contemporary edge.

We prefer to shoot in what could be described as a reportage, documentary or photojournalistic style in order to tell a story of the day in the most truthful way. We love being in the moment and having the ability to convey real, authentic chapters within a larger story.

What motivated you to start your business?

We love to create photographs that people will become personally and emotionally connected to. That is why we both got into wedding photography.

However the reason for Fox & Owl’s creation was more of a business choice… I was showcasing my wedding work on my own design and photography portfolio, but it wasn’t really resonating with potential clients. The style and quality were no different to what you see on Fox & Owl, but the branding clearly wasn’t obvious enough—the commercial work was probably confusing them.

As a designer with experience and knowledge on branding and identity, I knew that if I wanted to expand into the wedding industry, having a wedding specific brand was essential.

After shooting together and realising just how well we work as a team, Martyn and I decided to merge our wedding photography businesses. Within two weeks of making this decision, Fox & Owl was created and announced.

Tell us a little more about the day to day activities of your business

Most of the work consists of post-processing. I cull the photographs down to the best and then hand edit each individual one.

There’s also lots of admin involved as emails come in at all times of day and night. When we’re actually out at a wedding, then it’s quite straightforward because we just document what is in front of us.

Pre-wedding / couple sessions require a little more involvement and direction but even so, we still strive to capture raw, natural portraits and moments.

If our readers were to order from you, what can they expect?

Overall we have a very relaxed working style. Our approach towards photography is that of storytellers. We want to catch those fleeting smiles, brief glances and passing strokes.

We try to blend into the atmosphere in order to be as unobtrusive as possible. When people are less aware that they are being photographed we are able to capture them at their most carefree and natural.

How can couples judge if a brand is the right fit for their wedding?

When it comes to something as personal as photography, it’s really important that you find the right photographer for you. A photographers job is to photograph you and your loved ones on a very intimate day of your lives.

With the documentary approach especially that means spending a lot of time in each others presence. There are so many things to consider, such as liking their style and approach, but I can’t stress enough the importance of actually liking and getting on with the photographer themselves.

It doesn’t matter how handsome a couple are or how talented a photographer is, if the couple feel uncomfortable with whoever is taking their photograph, then the results aren’t going to be as natural or happy as they could have been with somebody they could have relaxed with.

What are your favourite moments from previous weddings you’ve been involved with?

We were thrilled when a gorgeous loved up pair asked us to shoot their intimate Chelsea elopement. As we were to be the only ones there, they asked if we would not only be their photographers, but their legal witnesses too. It was a really beautiful experience.

The bigger picture – does your business offer goods/services outside of the wedding world? Tell us more

As mentioned, Fox & Owl was a brand made specifically for the wedding world.

When not behind the lens, Martyn is a professional musician / entertainer who sings and plays a variety of instruments in various bands (Leeds City Stompers, The Washboard Resonators, Serious Sam Barrett etc.) and his own solo act.

As well as a wedding photographer, I am also a commercial photographer and graphic designer. We both offer our services to a range of different people and brands.

And finally, what or who inspires you and why?

Ever since my childhood, the outdoors, wildlife and nature have played a prodigious part in my work and have forever influenced my style. Inspired by these elements, I tend to gravitate towards neutral, earthy palettes and the soft muted tones that are often associated with film.
