Chic, sophisticated and simply elegant are words we would use to describe Peony and Gold who specialise in luxury bespoke floral designs.
Large statement blooms feature in many of their designs and this opulent simplicity results in really eye catching designs where the flowers rather than the foliage do the talking and we love it.
We’re really taken with the sense of freshness and vitality of Peony and Gold’s bouquets and contemporary arrangements and we’re sure you will feel the same as we ask Laura the owner to talk us through her business and motivation for starting it.
Tell us a little about yourself and your business
I am Laura Stephens and the owner of Peony and Gold.
I recently launched the business in the North East and I am based in Durham. Peony and Gold provide luxury floral designs for the distinguished bride. Our style is elegant and simple and we love big blooms, my husband and I joke that I love “all killer and no filler”
What motivated you to start your business?
I truly believe that everything happens for a reason and have always known I would have a great passion for my work one day. I was just never sure what that work would be.
After the birth of my second daughter I left my career and became a stay at home mum while renovating our new house. I have a very specific style and while accessorising our home I felt that I couldn’t find a florist in my area that met with this style. It was then that I decided to learn the art of floristry so that I could create things for myself. I had always had such a love of flowers but my career was in graphic design.
Peony and Gold was created after a family holiday. Sat on a beach in Barbados with my husband and our 2 children I was the most relaxed I had been in a long time. At that moment I declared that I was going to launch a floral design business and I was going to call it Peony and Gold. The name had just popped into my head and I knew that I had found my passion in that moment
Tell us a little more about the day to day activities of your business
While I would love to say that I spent the day playing with flowers, unfortunately that just isn’t true. Since starting the business I have become a buyer, designer, website editor, social media executive, accounts assistant, marketing manager and many other roles in between.
I typically spend the day in the office meeting gorgeous couples and discussing their floral designs. I love hearing all about their wedding plans. I also do the occasional delivery of non-wedding related flowers and spend the rest of my time, planning, preparing and playing with beautiful flowers. I put everything into each and every design and I am the worst for being a perfectionist.
If our readers were to order from you, what can they expect?
Beautiful luxurious flowers put together with precision and care. I am a professional through and through and I will do everything to make sure that every design that leaves the building is as perfect as possible.
I love white and I adore big blooms such as Peonies, Hydgrangea and David Austin Roses.
How can couples judge if a company is the right fit for their wedding?
I think most of the time you just “know”. It’s the same feeling as when you try on wedding dresses. You just “know” when you’ve found the right one. Have a look at a florists style, if this fits in with yours then it’s a good start.
Always meet with the florist in person, It’s important that you feel that you can trust them to provide the flowers of your dreams and that you are on the same wave length.
What are your favourite moments from previous weddings you’ve been involved with?
I love the excitement that couples have when discussing their plans. I love that they have a vision and that I get to re-create it on their most special day.
My favourite part of the day is taking a step back and admiring what has been created, knowing that in just a couple of hours the bride and groom will see their vision for the first time.
The bigger picture – does your business offer goods/services outside of the wedding world? Tell us more
Peony and Gold can create floristry for all occasions. We work from a studio rather than a shop and so we are by appointment only.
Its always lovely when I have a couple booked in and a family member treats them with Peony and Gold flowers for their birthday or any other special occasion. It just adds a personal touch which you can’t get from a supermarket.
And finally, what or who inspires you and why?
I am inspired to work hard by my “over achieving” husband. He makes it look so easy.
I am inspired by my daughters to be a “girl boss” which my seven year old thinks is very cool.
I am inspired by clean, modern, fresh and elegant designs.
