The Larmer Tree – A Wonderfully Exuberant Venue on the Dorset/Wiltshire Borders

by Michelle

The Larmer Tree is a wonderfully exuberant wedding venue situated on the Dorset/Wiltshire border. One of the first Victorian pleasure gardens, the Larmer Tree is a fabulously quirky example of Victorian extravagance and frivolity and is now home to free roaming peacocks and a pair of macaws.

With eleven acres of garden to explore and the choice of two halls for your ceremony and celebrations on an exclusive use basis, the Larmer Tree offers the most unique setting for your big day.

For those looking for a more intimate celebration, take a look at the Secret Garden weddings. This would be absolutely ideal for just the two of you or up to 30 guests.

Over to the team at the Larmer Tree now to tell us more about their delightful venue.

Tell us about your venue

The Larmer Tree was one of the first Victorian Pleasure Gardens and now is host to quirky follies and ponds, an outdoor Singing Theatre, an historic Jubilee Hall and modern Pavilion, that is our glass dining room.

Set in 11 acres and off the beaten track, we offer privacy, tranquillity & spaciousness.  Whether it’s December or June, we offer versatility with the weather to maximise your indoor and outdoor experience.

Do you offer civil marriage and civil partnership ceremonies?

We are licenced to offer civil ceremonies on site, a marriage or partnership, a blessing with your family minister or something personal and bespoke with a celebrant or humanist.  Anything goes here!

Do couples & their wedding party have exclusive use of your venue?

YES.

Venue capacity – How many guests can attend the day ceremony, if applicable, wedding breakfast & the evening reception?

150 for ceremonies and dinner, then up to 250 for the evening shindig.

Tell us just a little about any wedding packages you offer

We offer private hire at the weekends, in fact any day of the week, but also midweek is popular for the smaller intimate parties who don’t want the fuss and attention of a big wedding, but don’t just want a registry office either.  The ‘package’ is our service.

No two weddings are the same and we structure the fees accordingly but the package we offer to all, is top level service with dedicated planners whose aim is take all the stress away from the planning.  We will plan the day with you and execute it for you.

Do you have in-house catering, or preferred suppliers or are couples free to choose their own caterers?

Yes, our in-house caterers are Forkingout Ltd from Salisbury and we have been in partnership for 10 years. You don’t need to look for outside caterers, our boys will do drinks and canapes, wedding feast, supper, cheese towers, late night booze food.  The lot.

Can couples supply their own alcohol for the evening? Is there a corkage fee?

We consider there to be 3 boozy elements to a wedding party.  The drinks reception, the wedding breakfast and the evening knees-up.  We offer corkage for parts one and two, either or, but then we ask that you and your guests support the bar in the evening.  Our license is until 12.30am.

Are couples completely free to choose their own wedding entertainment & do you have a specific sound system?

Absolutely.  We can make great recommendations from a list of tried and tested musicians dependant on budget and taste, but couples are very welcome to bring in whomever they like.

Do you offer accommodation on site? If so, for how many guests?

Camping for all! …………. But we do have a beautiful 13C house on the estate which we offer for rent.  It is a 5-minute walk (across the fields) but sleeps 15 and is the most magnificent place to be getting ready, and then barbequing the next day.

Do you have an in-house wedding co-ordinator?

YES. We are with you from start to finish. Through months of planning and on the day.  Hands on.

How far in advance can couples or their wedding stylist, florist etc have access to the venue in order to decorate it?

A day or two if we don’t have other bookings, otherwise our co-ordinators will decorate for you the morning of.  We try and offer as much flexibility as possible

Do you have gardens or an outdoor area for wedding photographs?

Oh yes………………… just 11 acres and ornamental buildings with peacocks and parrots.

What’s your best advice to couples when choosing their perfect wedding venue?

You need to be able to relax. To trust. You are hosting the biggest party of your life, so it needs to be home from home where your friends and family feel welcomed, spoilt  and privileged to be part of your day.

The perfect backdrop is important for photographs, but good photographs come with space and freedom, and the way guests are made to feel will be expressed in their faces.  It is about the senses.

Any finally, what are your favourite moments from previous wedding you’ve been involved with?

So so many, I’ve been here for 15 years and love it. It sounds corny now, but flash mob dances, I’ve seen the parents of a bride create Bollywood on the dancefloor; groom’s singing their speeches; granny has made the cake, nieces and nephews have decorated it.

Fire-eaters, Elvis impersonators, duck racing, wedding guest wedding cake-bake-offs, lamas, dogs, horses and owls. Ceilidhs, fireworks, rounders on the lawn. So much. So lucky.
