Alfie's Beer Bus on Girl Gets Wed

Are you looking for a super characterful mobile bar for your wedding? Excellent, then why don’t you check out Alfie’s Beer Bus, a mobile bar serving locally sourced craft beer from a fabulously quirky converted ice cream van.

Alfie’s Beer Bus specialise in beer, but don’t be fooled by the name as they also stock spirits from the Pendery Distillery, together with a great selection of soft drinks. There’s something for everyone. You can also request specific drinks and they will do everything they can to stock them for you. How’s that for service?

Alfie’s cheeky retro good looks also make him great fun for your guests to pose next to for that all important selfie. To tell us more about how Alfie can add that extra fun element to your big day, we’ll pass you straight over his owners Paul and Holly.

Tell us a little about yourself and your business

We are Paul & Holly, a husband and wife team who are the proud owners and founders of Alfie’s Beer Bus.

Alfie’s is a mobile bar and bottle shop that specialises in locally made craft beer, cider and spirits from independent microbreweries and distilleries across Wales – all served from our converted ice cream van!

A lot of people ask who Alfie is, well Alfie was Paul’s grandad who enjoyed a great pint and who also served in the Coldstream Guard in WW2 – so whom better to name our bar on wheels after!

What motivated you to start your business?

Alfie’s grew from spending 8 months working in Valencia and visiting (on an all too frequent basis) a small, quirky bar called Labratorio 2, that boasted a seemingly endless menu of European beers and cocktails (especially their Mojito!) all served alongside a mini tapas or montadito that complimented your drink perfectly!

We realised there was nothing like this in Wales and once we were back in Cardiff and had visited a host of street food festivals and pop up events we realised that instead of opening a bar and getting people to come to us, we wanted to take our idea to the people but how…? An ice cream van of course!

Tell us a little more about the day to day activities of your business

Alongside looking after our 2 year old, which is a full time job in itself! We spend most of our time, surfing the internet to find new events to attend, tasting new beer (it’s a hard life!) meeting clients and brewers and as our ice cream van was born 27 years ago, constant maintenance to keep him handsome!

If our readers were to order from you, what can they expect?

Beer, beer and more beer! We only got married ourselves in April last year so understand how important every detail is, so we work with our couples to ensure their bar is to their exacting standards and taste.  If the couple want a specific drink – we’ll get it!

We always personalise the van and decorate it to compliment the theme of the wedding – and he’s not shy and loves a selfie so we always encourage our couples to take photos with him!

How can couples judge if a company is the right fit for their wedding?

You want a company who are great at communication, willing to listen to requests and not afraid of a challenge.  Photos and videos are an excellent way to see what you’re getting and reading reviews gives a great insight into the company and their services from a client’s perspective.

What are your favourite moments from previous weddings you’ve been involved with?

Our first ever wedding was in the heart of the Brecon Beacons and was a month before our own wedding so not only were the brides full of emotion, we were too as we knew what was coming for ourselves!

It was a stunning location, with some truly hilarious characters that made our first wedding experience a memorable one.

The bigger picture – does your business offer goods/services outside of the wedding world? Tell us more

Yes – we often frequent food festivals, charity events, farmers markets and everything in between!  We also run our own events throughout the year that have been previously held in Cardiff and Carmarthenshire.

We are also proud suppliers of the Food Assembly, which is an online market place for customers to buy products straight from the producer!

What have you got planned for the next 12 months?

We have a very busy events calendar that really kicks off in June so make sure you check out our website to see where we are and pop by and say hello – we love a chat!

And finally, what or who inspires you and why?

The open road… Our bus only gets to 50mph downhill with a tailwind so it takes us a while to get to places (so we always leave in plenty of time!!) so we spend a lot of time on the road and enjoying the Welsh countryside.  There’s nothing better than driving through Carmarthenshire or the Brecon Beacons with the windows open and the smell of beer wafting around to bring a smile to your face!
