It’s a pleasure today to introduce you to you super creative wedding photographers The Hendrys. Sarah and Darren’s objective is to tell the unique story of your wedding day in a natural, emotive and honest way.
The Hendry’s approach to photography is quite non- traditional and has that sort of uber relaxed vibe that allows their photos to speak for themselves, each telling it’s own story of different elements of your day.
Their shooting style is mostly discrete and documentary blending in with your wedding party to capture the action as it happens, resulting in the most tender, fun and relaxed images.
We’ll let the Hendrys and their photography speak for themselves now as they tell us more about their truly unique style.
Tell us a little about yourself and your business
Howdy, we’re Sarah and Darren! Bunny parents, health freaks, light lovers, succulent collectors and vegan foodies—that kinda sums us up! We’re very lucky to have a job capturing shiny happy couples in love; it’s darn good. We are not typical wedding photographers, that is for certain!
You could say our style is very non-traditional and pretty offbeat. Our approach to shooting is simple; we’ll keep it mostly documentary (you can’t beat a good caught-off-guard expression), capture the action as it unfolds throughout the day, avoid cheesy clichés and let everyone have good old knees up without any interference from us.
We’re constantly pushing ourselves creatively and are incredibly passionate about telling unique stories for each couple, so we aim to go into each wedding with a clear mind and eyes wide open. If we could describe our work in four words they would be the following: Natural. Emotive. Creative. Honest. We’re also suckers for some awesome light.
What motivated you to start your business?
There was no real grand plan behind it; one day we had one of those out of the blue conversations about how mundane and utterly uninspiring our lives were at that point. It was a bad case of wake up, work, eat, sleep, and we were really over that and wanted out.
We spoke about doing more in the way of photography work and got really excited at the prospect that we could turn something that we loved doing into a business and make money from it. So we stuck an ad up on our local Gumtree that night, got our first wedding booked up a couple of weeks after, shot it together, and have never looked back!
Tell us a little more about the day to day activities of your business
When not doing the wedding thang, you will usually find us drowning ourselves in matcha green tea lattes and letting our bunnies run riot around the house whilst we edit our little cotton socks off, keep up to date with emails, and do general account stuff.
If our readers were to order from you, what can they expect?
Efficiency, creativity, consistency, honesty and all round good vibes. We’ve done this for almost 7 years now and have seen it all, so we also have the experience behind us. We’re more than willing to help couples who need advice about all things wedding-y!
How can couples judge if a company is the right fit for their wedding?
Ask questions and see if they can accommodate your (realistic) expectations. If not, they are probably not the right people for you. Also, get to know the person behind the company – that is super important.
Lastly, make sure your experience starts in a positive manner, there’s nothing worse than feeling deflated after a negative reply from someone who you’ve got your heart set on.
What are your favourite moments from previous weddings you’ve been involved with?
That’s a tough one! There have been countless moments over the years that we remember fondly, from going up to the Arctic Circle to photograph a wedding in a massive ice chapel, to shooting in the middle of nowhere in Scotland where you could hear a pin drop during the intimate ceremony.
One of our most favourites was wandering around Positano with a couple who eloped there; we explored the quaint streets with them, taking in all the colourful sights and sounds along the way.
The bigger picture – does your business offer goods/services outside of the wedding world? Tell us more
It’s mostly weddings, elopements and engagement sessions for us. We’ve also been known to do vow renewals too. Saying that, we’ve just taken on our first proper fashion photography job in YEARS.
We feel we need to keep fresh and try something a bit different so this is going to be an enjoyable (but slightly tough!) venture. It’s just a different way of shooting than we’re used to. We’re always up for pushing ourselves creatively when possible.
What have you got planned for the next 12 months?
We have big plans in motion for next year but it’s all very hush-hush at the moment (sorry for being vague!). At the moment, we know that capturing some rad weddings is definitely on the cards – we always have that to look forward to, hence why we enjoy being wedding photographers so much!
And finally, what or who inspires you and why?
Le Fawnhawk and George Byrne – two LA-based artists. Their work is incredibly inspiring, imaginative, original and downright awesome. Also, Moby; such a beautiful soul, who uses his celebrity status to make a difference in the world of animal activism. We also met him a while back and were in awe of his energy and get up and go attitude, which we try and take on board when we have a slight slump in life or business.
