In Conversation With Laura at Laura Elisabeth Avery MUA

by Michelle

Every bride wants their wedding day hair and make up to look gorgeous. You also want to feel comfortable and confident with your look.

Most brides agree that the wedding day look they’re aiming for is to be the most beautiful version of themselves, with their hair and makeup enhancing their features, not overpowering them.

For a hair and make up artist who understands what brides want on their big day and just as important, who is able to make them feel totally at ease, we are super pleased to introduce Laura, who runs Laura Elisabeth Avery MUA, a professional and published hair and make up artist.

Laura’s work is her passion and as you can see how she enhances the natural beauty of brides and models in the images below. Over to Laura now to tell you more.

Tell us a little about yourself and your business

My name is Laura, of Laura Elisabeth Avery MUA. I have always worked within the hair & beauty industry but only decided to specialize in the bridal market a few years ago, I have always had a passion for weddings. Since then I have had some amazing opportunities and been lucky enough to have my work published.

I mainly work alone but sometimes I do call on some other talented ladies who work closely with me on larger bookings when I need an extra pair of hands! I cover all of Devon but always happy to travel too. I love being part of such a special day and meeting all my amazing brides.

What motivated you to start your business?

I have always had a great passion for hair and makeup but decided working in a salon wasn’t for me. So I took the leap to become a freelance artist and i have never looked back since!

I am so lucky to get to be a part of such a special day. Every wedding I attend is such a blessing and I cherish those memories.

Tell us a little more about the day to day activities of your business

The night before a booking I make sure my kit is in perfect condition, everything is clean, sanitised and topped up, brushes washed and dried and paperwork complete. The next morning I wake up, get myself ready, load the car and make my way to the the bride’s location of choice, it could be a barn in the middle of no where or a luxurious hotel.

I start by finding a little area with good light that i can set up in, then my job begins! Prepping skin and applying makeup or styling hair. I always stay until my bride is in her dress in case we need any touch ups or quick colour change. Most of the time i end up staying and assisting with other duties like lacing the dress, taking photos and other small jobs. After my bride is ready to leave for the aisle  I  pack up my kit and makeup my way home.

If our readers were to order from you, what can they expect?

When my brides book with me they get a professional, reliable and personalised package each time, with me being on call to their needs 24/7. They know I am always at the end of the phone or email when needed.

I am lucky that I get to build such good relationships with my clients. I can offer luxury bridal packages as well which includes a handy goody bag to see you through your big day.

How can couples judge if a company is the right fit for their wedding?

I think its important to do your research when picking your artist. Make sure you look at a handful of people and pick the artist that suits you and your style best.

Once you have narrowed down your search, you can start booking a trial, even at the trial remember you don’t have to book that person if you don’t feel comfortable, you want to get on with them on a personal level too, after all your spending one of the most important days of your life with them! For booking me personally, I would like to think my reviews speak for themselves.

What are your favourite moments from previous weddings you’ve been involved with?

There are so many, I know this sounds cheesy but every time I see my bride in their dresses all made up my heart just fills with joy, to be part of such a special day and to see them at their happiest is just a feeling like no other.

I never want to leave them, I do have most of my brides on social media though so I get to see all of the pictures following the wedding and keep in contact which I love.

The bigger picture – does your business offer goods/services outside of the wedding world? Tell us more

Yes I do! Although I specialize in bridal I love to work in fashion and editorial hair/makeup as well. I do also like to dabble in special effects makeup which is the complete opposite to bridal, I love blood and gore and enjoy making my own silicone moulds for cuts and wounds.

As well as all of that I volunteer as a Skin Camouflage Practitioner for the charity Changing Faces which is very rewarding.

What have you got planned for the next 12 months?

I have some more editorial work coming up. A lot of weddings and of course Halloween is fast approaching for all my exciting SFX creations.

And finally, what or who inspires you and why?

I take inspiration from a such a lot. My brides, other vendors, amazing venues and obviously other artists in the same field as myself.
