Tell us a little about yourself and your business
I’m Tom, chief agent and floral magician at Agent F.
What motivated you to start your business?
I have been lucky to always work at the top end of my industry, and it was in my last job employed by somebody else at The Real Flower Company that I learned how much more beautiful seasonal, British grown flowers can be and was inspired to embark on a journey towards growing my own cut flower stock.
I was, however, struck by how chintzy and slightly twee many of the companies doing this kind of thing are, so I decided that I would launch a business that combines seasonal, British grown and sustainably sourced flowers with a cool, contemporary style which reflects my personality. The result is Agent F!
Tell us a little more about the day to day activities of your business
No two days are the same, which is why I adore my job. I have the boredom threshold of a three year old! I go to the flower market most days, and occasionally visit the farms and growers we work with.
Some days I am in the studio designing our online collections or creating bouquets or corporate arrangements, other days I am out meeting clients and carrying out site visits. The most enjoyable days are the ones where we get to put my ideas into practise and transform wedding and event venues with our floral creations.
If our readers were to order from you, what can they expect?
Your lovely brides-to-be can expect a friendly, personal and professional service from initial consultation right through to the big day itself. Every bride is unique, which is why our service is bespoke and we design your flowers to not only to complement your dress, your colouring and your venue(s) but also to reflect your personality and the things that make you tick.
How can couples judge if a company is the right fit for their wedding?
Have a look at suppliers past work and choose someone whose taste and style resonates with you. In the wedding industry, good suppliers work very closely with their clients, so in my opinion it also comes down to personality.
It’s important to choose suppliers with whom you will get along and who will listen to you, take on board your ideas, likes and dislikes and add their professional knowledge and expertise to achieve results that you will love.
What are your favourite moments from previous weddings you’ve been involved with?
We created the flowers for an ultra-chic wedding at Cheateau De La Goujeonnerie, near la Rochelle, a few years ago now. This was one of the first destination weddings I worked on and whilst it was totally exhausting, it was so much fun and a massive learning curve.
Both the client and Team AF were thrilled with our creations, which included a floral pagoda set in the rolling French countryside, and in the poolside marquee we filled the table with all manner of gold-painted objets including antique candelabra, vintage vases and even gold monkeys! The highlight was The Cuban Brothers performing at the afterparty, to which we were invited.
In general, I just love seeing a bride’s face light up when we deliver her bouquet on the day, or when she sees her venue all dressed up for the event. It makes the all hard work worthwhile.
The bigger picture – does your business offer goods/services outside of the wedding world? Tell us more
We do indeed. Every day of the week we are busy handcrafting and hand-delivering luxurious bouquets and planted gifts in our signature style. Our bouquets feature British grown flowers alongside decadent orchids and other seasonal flora. We deliver London-wide and can offer overnight delivery throughout the UK.
We also delivery weekly flowers to private homes, offices, salons, shops and hotels and create fabulous florals for parties both private and corporate.
We hold regular floristry workshops at stylish retailers which have included Skandium and Heals, and we have a series of events coming up for autumn and winter 2018 including our eve popular festive masterclasses.
What have you got planned for the next 12 months?
2018 is a very exciting year for us – we are making over our ecommerce platform with a new online store launching this summer, and we are also planning our first bricks-and-mortar boutique which will open in London later this year. To stay abreast of all our exciting news, feel free to visit our website and sign up to our mailing list.
And finally, what or who inspires you and why?
I find endless inspiration in the natural and built world, in the trees, plants and flowers and architecture all around us. I love visiting beautiful gardens – I am particularly inspired by the work of Arne Maynard, and also the houses and gardens designed in harmony by the late, great Edwin Lutyens and Gertrude Jekyll.
In terms of flowers, Paula Pryke is in my eyes the queen of the flower world and her books inspired me enormously when I was first starting out in Floristry. She is also lovely!
