Tell us a little about yourself and your business
Buy Our Honeymoon is run by Shelley and Andrew Green — and we originally set up the site in 2005 for use at our own wedding. We’d lived with each other before taking the plunge, so we already had all the housewares traditionally given as gifts, and very little room in our flat for any more. What we really wanted instead was some help towards making our honeymoon happen.
Our service lets you compile a wedding gift list where your guests can give you a night of your ocean villa accommodation, or 100 miles of your flight, or tickets to a Broadway show.
You can include anything you can think of, and fund it through your gifts. You get the money in your bank account, while your guests get to choose something memorable and special. It’s a real gift, not just an anonymous donation.
What motivated you to start your business?
Our honeymoon was a three-week, 3000-mile road trip across Florida and the Deep South. We were amazed at the generosity of our family and friends, and we can honestly say that they all helped us to kick-start our marriage with the most amazing honeymoon we could possibly have dreamed of. It sounds like marketing flannel, but it’s absolutely the truth: those memories are far more valuable to us than physical gifts ever could have been.
Tell us a little more about the day to day activities of your business
Andrew and I run the business together, and people do joke about how we manage not to kill each other — but we have different roles within the business. Andrew is tech guru and he takes care of all things code. He keeps traditional hours, but I’ll answer your queries at all hours of the day. You’ll rarely have to wait for a reply!
If our readers were to order from you, what can they expect?
A nothing-is-too-much-trouble attitude. Because it’s our own business we can really try to implement any of the suggestions our couples have. We have evolved over the last decade driven by the needs of our customers.
We like to think that our service is uniquely flexible, and uniquely tailored to building your perfect honeymoon fund. Most traditional gift lists are about quantities and brands, ours is about telling the story of your honeymoon, and really engaging your guests with your plans.
We try to make cash honeymoon contributions as real, as polite, and as meaningful as physical gifts. You don’t have to have made all your plans in advance, and you can book your honeymoon with any travel agent you want. You can even simply invite gift suggestions!
How can couples judge if a company is the right fit for their wedding?
In general, I think you can get a vibe of whether a company is a good fit simply by talking to them. I remember for my own wedding we had to change our florist when she thought chicken feathers scattered down the aisle would look great with the flowers. We realised that was maybe a bit too avant garde for us!
Here at Buy Our Honeymoon, we try to give you lots of options to customise your registry to fit your dream; you can choose from a range of designs from elegant and vintage, to funky and modern, and you can customise your chosen design with your own photos too.
What are your favourite moments from previous weddings you’ve been involved with?
One of the pitfalls of helping couples put together ideas for their dream honeymoon (and being big travel fans ourselves!) is that you are always a bit green with envy at the amazing places people are going to. However, our favourite gifts are the ones that are super quirky and unique to the couple. A ball of yarn for in-flight knitting, or a dog-sitting service!
The bigger picture – does your business offer goods/services outside of the wedding world? Tell us more
Our service is used for other things outside of wedding world but usually only by people who’ve used us first as a wedding registry. Baby showers, anniversary parties and special birthdays are all popular but normally we’ll have been used first for a couple’s wedding. Even so, it’s not always for specifically a honeymoon fund – some couples use us for entirely custom lists of campervan parts, art work, or to mix honeymoon gifts with things for their home. We even helped one couple plant an arboretum!
What have you got planned for the next 12 months?
Because we look after the service in-house, from start to finish, we’re always making small improvements and adjustments — and we don’t often plan them very far in advance. It’s a labour of love!
Our service is brilliant for couples with international families, as you can use different currencies, payment systems and even languages on your list. We’ve got some ideas on how to make that work even better, so watch this space.

Our couples inspire us. Their creativity is contagious! We’re so proud when couples use our service as a platform to show their unique personalities as a partnership. Their beautiful photos and amazing honeymoon plans give such a wonderful glimpse into their personalities. We aim to always provide a service that is as creative, flexible and unique as they are.
