Stable Cottage Cakes specialise in making the most delicious and beautiful wedding cakes. Designed specifically around you and your wedding theme and colours with such an eye for detail, Lucy’s cakes really are something special.
Stable Cottage Cakes are totally unique in that all their cakes are baked with wonderfully fresh eggs from their own chickens.
Lucy at Stable Cottage is particularly proud of not only her great cakes, but also her eco credentials. As she notes on her website: “By choosing me as your wedding cake supplier, you are supporting a small ethical business that really does put animal welfare before profit.” We’ll let Lucy continue to tell you much more about her business now.
Tell us a little about yourself and your business
Well, where to start? I’ve been designing and creating wedding cakes for four years now, and I absolutely love my job. Stable Cottage Cakes covers the Surrey area and a little beyond, and I love visiting and delivering to the huge variety of wedding venues that Surrey has to offer.
I’ve always been artistic, and sugar craft combined with the fun of baking is the perfect form of expression for me – I can spend hours crafting sugar flowers and piping royal icing, the time flies and before I know it the light has faded and I’ve skipped dinner!
What motivated you to start your business?
When I started my business I was determined not to be one of these large companies that exploits the planet and it’s fluffy inhabitants purely to be successful. Not only does my company create stunning cakes that look and taste amazing, but the principles which I have built the business around ensure that no matter how busy I get, my ethical values stay the same.
All my cakes are baked with fresh eggs from my own rescued chickens. My company is totally unique, in that I really do put animal welfare before profit – and anyone who has seen how spoilt my girls are certainly couldn’t argue with that! Please do take a look at my chicken page on my website, to read all about their rescue story and recovery in my care. Not only this, but all my deliveries are made in my little sky-blue smart car – ensuring minimum damage to the environment.
Tell us a little more about the day to day activities of your business
My work day is certainly varied! From deliveries and consultations to baking, icing and chicken keeping; I’m certainly never bored. My girls roam the garden for an hour a day of supervised fun to keep Mr fox at bay, before they return to their large outdoor Avery full of vegetable hangers and various treats to keep them entertained while I’m working.
Then the rest of the day can be a mix of baking and sugar craft depending on what stage of the week I’m at. Most weekends are often filled with wedding fairs and consultations, so never a dull moment.
If our readers were to order from you, what can they expect?
I constantly provide a friendly and personal service, as every time you contact the company you are speaking directly to me. I meet face to face with all my clients to ensure a full understanding of exactly what their dream cake entails.
A list of my upcoming wedding fairs is available on request to try my samples and have a chat to help couples get a feel for what I’m about before booking in to spend a Saturday morning talking all things cake!
How can couples judge if a company is the right fit for their wedding?
The best way to get to know any supplier is to meet them in person; whether this is via a wedding fair or meeting for a private chat. Browse the website and compare it to other companies to help you decide, and certainly try samples if the supplier is anything to do with food.
Generally when you get the right feel from a supplier, you just know. The key really is to chose people you get on well with; after all, they’ll be in your life for the next 14months or so!
What are your favourite moments from previous weddings you’ve been involved with?
My favourite moment is always when couples see the cake, but since I can’t always be present for this moment (much as you want to greet all your suppliers on the wedding morning, you will most likely have too much to do!), I always look forward to receiving emails and cards afterwards, as the kind words never cease to delight me.
Receiving the professional photos of the day and the cake is always a lovely moment too, as you get to see the moment when the couple cut the cake, and the joy on their faces is always just perfect.
The bigger picture – does your business offer goods/services outside of the wedding world? Tell us more
In the quieter periods I can take on celebration cake bookings, but this is always dependant on availability.
What have you got planned for the next 12 months?
Bake, bake, bake! I have a whirlwind of a summer ahead of me, and each week I just can’t wait to get started!
And finally, what or who inspires you and why?
In baking? My grandparents. They always created the most stunning birthday cakes for myself and my sisters growing up, and this is a constant reminder of thinking outside the box for me each time I approach a new challenge. The industry of cake is not just food – it’s a form of art.
