Tell us a little about yourself and your business
Tom and Nikki, are a husband and wife team. They work together from a fun and creative studio nestled above the roof tops of Leicester City Centre, creating wonderful stationery for weddings worldwide.
Tom thinks he is the brains of the outfit and looks after the business side of things. As well as hand making all of their invites, does ALL the cutting and sticking with a scalpel and trusty safety ruler, he creates the spreadsheets, sorts all the packing (beautifully wrapping all he’s made in pink tissue and lots of cardboard,) whilst singing along to BBC Radio 6 Music, regular coffee duties and ensuring we both go home on time to see the kids.
Nikki, is an art school graduate, and has been a stationery designer ever since, creating Christmas, birthday and special occasions cards, working for many high street stores, Hallmark, UK charities and publishers worldwide. You’ve probably already received one of her creations. As you can probably tell, she is therefore the creative side of the partnership so will be your first port of call for all things design based. Tickled Pink want to create keepsakes, items of stationery that are too fun to bin, they are meant to be kept because they are lovely mementoes from when a family member or friend got married.
What motivated you to start your business?
Designing stationery for the High Street is 80% Christmas, and that’s what the majority of Nikki’s career has been involved with, even in mid-summer, there’s always snow to be drawn! Nikki designed their invites in 2001, well how could she not… Then a friend asked for hers to be designed, and the rest is history.
From an initial collection of 7 designs it’s evolved into the current 30+. Some have been long gone, some are still in there, like LoveDoves, others have evolved. In 2011 when there were too many orders for Nikki to manage alone, admin, posting, samples to send, printing and making and still Christmas designs to create for regular High Street customers, Tom left a job he hated and joined the business.
Tell us a little more about the day to day activities of your business
After a swim at the local city pool, Nikki heads home again to make sure Tom and the kids are awake, usually Tom’s got the kitchen spotless and there’s time for a quick catch up on the school day before the kids escape. Life is so much simpler now they are at secondary school. The kids don’t talk to one another of course. They are teenagers…
Then it’s a drive to the studio and emails to answer and samples to send before Nikki gets designing and Tom is busy making stationery. Suddenly it’s 5:30, hopefully we remembered to have lunch, but Tom is good at sorting that. Nikki is usually so wrapped up in designing she doesn’t notice the time. It was always Tom’s job to make sure the kids were collected from after school club in time too, but now they are older, they come home and make their own tea and chill till mum and dad get back, then the kids hide in their rooms!

How can couples judge if a company is the right fit for their wedding?
Check their folios, read their reviews, talk to them. Nikki has made great friends from brides to be she met via email and friendships have evolved as their orders come together.
You can sometimes work together for two years before the big day from save the dates, then there are often new baby cards and new homes to add!
What are your favourite moments from previous weddings you’ve been involved with?
When you get an email from a bride saying that your design encapsulated them as a couple and their plans and design ideas and how their guests have loved their wedding stationery. That really makes for a skippy moment when you know the long days and late nights are all worth it!
The bigger picture – does your business offer goods/services outside of the wedding world? Tell us more
We did, but weddings took over! We had a website with sewing kits for silly, sock animals, a break for Nikki from always designing on a computer, a chance to put her textiles degree to more use, and did plenty of Christmas fairs too, but we’ve recently closed that website as we couldn’t put the time and love into that it deserved.
What have you got planned for the next 12 months?
Designing new collections, so many ideas whirling around on scraps of paper and in Nikki’s head and notebooks that need to be turned into printable arts! Oh and world domination of course, but they said that last year as well!!
And finally, what or who inspires you and why?
Brides, so many great trends out there, but actually talking with brides at wedding fairs and via email and discovering what suits them and their special day is far more important.
Some grooms are interested, most aren’t, so brides and their design ideas created in a Tickled Pink style are what works for TP. It’s their day and Nikki and Tom love making the special papery bits to suit them, their guests, their dreams and of course their budget!
