Tell us a little about yourself and your business
I opened Vanilla Rose in London in 2004. After a few years operating as a retail florist we decided to specialise in wedding and event floristry as this was where we were building a really solid reputation (plus we love weddings!).
What motivated you to start your business?
I think I had an early mid-life crisis! After a few years working in marketing and then the photography industry I was hitting my thirties feeling I hadn’t really found my niche. On a bit of a whim I decided to sign up for an intensive 6 week floristry course – and got the bug!
Tell us a little more about the day to day activities of your business
Every day is different. I can be teaching a class, meeting a client, prepping for a wedding, or setting up at a wedding. There’s also hours spent preparing quotes, ordering flowers and keeping our social media accounts up to date.
If our readers were to order from you, what can they expect?
Gorgeous flowers and super friendly, helpful florists of course!
How can couples judge if a company is the right fit for their wedding?
Check out their social media. Most florists will have plenty of images from recent weddings. Pick two or three that you’re drawn to and get in touch. At the end of the day, go with your gut.
What are your favourite moments from previous weddings you’ve been involved with?
I always love taking the bride’s bouquet to her. It’s a great feeling when you see they are over the moon with it and you know you’ve got it spot on. We get so many lovely thank you cards and emails from clients and they always mean a lot.
The bigger picture – does your business offer goods/services outside of the wedding world? Tell us more
We provide flowers for any event and also run a flower school in Scotland. The teaching side is very rewarding and we always have great fun as well as learning. People never think they’ll be able to create something as beautiful as they do. They always surprise themselves.
What have you got planned for the next 12 months?
More weddings, more events, more classes and hopefully a little holiday!
And finally, what or who inspires you and why?
The ‘what’ would be opening my curtains every morning to see mountains. I’m lucky to live and work in a beautiful place surrounded by nature. The ‘who’ would be my small offspring. They are just getting old enough to show an interest in flowers and I love passing on a bit of knowledge. I sometimes have a five year old assistant to help me clear weddings and he takes it very seriously!
