Tell us a little about yourself and your business
I am Lauren Amy. I am a freelance makeup artist and specialise in fashion, editorial, special occasion and wedding makeup. Being near the lake district means most of my work currently is in weddings. I get to meet the most beautiful brides and see the most beautiful venues. My aim within my job is to make everyone feel special, feel beautiful but still very much themselves, I feel it’s so important for those to not mask their faces but to enhance them.
With more of the fashion based work I like to show off my artistic side, this is where my real passion lies, I like to create. I like to show feeling and emotion through my work whilst working with whatever theme has been asked for. The two come together very well, I get so much inspiration from both and they enhance each side of my job.
What motivated you to start your business?
I was a beauty therapist before I got into makeup. I always enjoyed this as a job but never fully felt satisfied. When I went to specialise in makeup I knew this was what I had a burning desire to do. I wanted to start my own business and I didn’t care what anyone else said, I did it and I made it work.
Even still now I’m always pushing myself to better my business and better myself as a makeup artist and I don’t think that will ever change. I absolutely love this job though and I don’t think there is a better feeling then to love what you spend most of your life doing.
Tell us a little more about the day to day activities of your business
Its pretty simple really. I do whatever makeup jobs I have booked that day. If it’s a wedding that can be half of my day taken up, special occasion makeups and evening makeups I can fit many in a day and photo shoots would take the whole day’s appointment.
I travel around most of the time for my job, I like to offer this to people and find most people prefer you to go to them to do makeup. Then there is always the boring side to every business, paper work. Need I say anymore, on those days I normally take myself to a café to get on with that kind of work as I’ll find other things to do if I try this in my own house.
If our readers where to order from you, what can they expect?
They can expect full honesty and no hidden rules or prices, once they’ve spoken to me they will be 100% sure of exactly where they stand. I am a professionally trained and certified makeup artist with full insurance of what I do. I am confident that I will be able to make my clients feel amazing in their makeup on their big day, with plenty of experience I’ll be able to help them figure out exactly what look is best for them.
How can couples judge if a company is the right fit for their wedding?
It should feel natural and easy talking to whomever, they should feel like they are all on the same wave length and feel that whomever fully understands what they want. There should be a connection and couples should feel like they can trust and want to put their trust into that specific company.
What are your favourite moments from previous weddings you’ve been involved with?
For me its always about great atmosphere on the wedding morning. When the whole party are relaxed, excited, helping each other. A great vibe in the room really helps with doing the makeups. Everything seems to work smoothly and I leave feeling so blessed and grateful that I got to be a part of such an amazing wedding morning.
It is always a huge complement when you can see how happy you have made someone after doing their makeup, there is no bigger confidence boost then that. Its moments like that as to why I love this job so much.
The bigger picture- does your business offer goods/ services outside of the wedding world?
Yes. And I love it when a previous bride gets in touch with me regularly for makeup appointments for any specific occasion. I will offer makeups for anything. For example: evenings out, events, fashion shows, makeover days, proms, festival makeups, I even provide makeup lessons where I can help someone learn how to apply makeup that suits them and their lifestyle.
What have you got planned for the next 12 months?
Makeups!!!! I’m fully booked this season now and I’m getting booked up for next year. I want to organise some more photo shoots, and I am also working on a charity event… that’s all I can say for now. I have booked myself a rather exciting holiday to New York also which I’m very excited about, so that will be a gift to myself to look forward too after wedding season has calmed down a little bit this year. Ill most likely end up buying lots of makeup when over there to bring back for my lovely clients. It’s a bit of an addiction.
And finally who inspires you and why?
I have always been inspired by my tutors at School of Makeup in Manchester, their careers are only something to dream about, their honesty with their struggles within the industry makes me carry on and push my way through the difficult times, they are real people but incredibly successful people and there is nothing more inspiring then that. Whenever I need a boost or some help they are still here for me now and they genuinely understand exactly whatever it is I need some help with, I leave that place ten feet taller.
Alex Box is a huge inspiration to me. She is the definition of a makeup ARTIST. Her work is breath-taking. A lot of the inspiration I have gained for creating my own pieces have been triggered by her. Even now I feel she is hundreds of steps ahead of every other creative makeup artist out there, always one who will make trends.
I can’t help but love Vivienne Westwood, I have always admired how she creates what she wants to create, she has a don’t care what anyone else thinks feel going on with her collections, she isn’t afraid of colour, she isn’t afraid of shapes and textures. Her work is something that I could look at for hours, her punk vibe screams out in her work, the makeup is always insane. Her spring/summer 18 collection is one of my favourites to date and just empowered me instantly to put together a shoot inspired by what I was seeing. She literally brought colour back into a creative block for me.
