Tell us a little about yourself and your business
I’m very hands on and I love to be creative. I used to be a hairdresser until I channelled that creativity into cakes, now I run my own business from my home in Morfa Nefyn on the beautiful Llŷn Peninsula. I began the business four years ago making cupcakes and celebration cakes, now I focus on wedding cakes, favours and dessert tables.
I’m very proud to have been regularly featured in national wedding magazines, online publications and wedding blogs. I’ve also been awarded ‘Best Wedding Cakes – North Wales’ at the Welsh National Wedding Awards in 2015 and 2016, as well as North Wales Cake Designer of the Year at The Welsh Wedding Awards earlier this year. I love what I do and it keeps me very busy!
What motivated you to start your business?
I’ve always been a ‘doer’, I get an idea in my head that I’m going to do something and I go for it; starting Hayley’s Piped Dreams was a bit like that.
I’ve always been creative and I began to enjoy baking more and more, at the same time I wanted a more flexible working life that would fit around my kids; the answer was to start my own cake business, so that’s what I did!
Tell us a little more about the day to day activities of your business
In a few years’ time I’d like to think I might have staff but at the moment Hayley’s Piped Dreams is just me working my socks off at home! I’m involved in every aspect of the business, I meet with clients to discuss their design ideas and needs, I design and create each cake, and even deliver every wedding cake.
I attend wedding fairs, take all my own photographs and I’m very active on social media. Marketing is a very important part of the business.
If our readers were to order from you, what could they expect?
A professional, friendly service and a cake that looks and tastes amazing!
How can couples judge if a company is the right fit for their wedding?
Always look at their portfolio and reviews to see if their portfolio matches your style. If you can then take the time to meet up/have a good chat on the phone to see if you get on with that supplier.
What are your favourite moments from previous weddings you’ve been involved with?
I’ve now made over 300 wedding cakes. Each one has been unique and I’m so privileged to have been asked to take a small part in one of the most special days for each couple.
The bigger picture – does your business offer goods/services outside of the wedding world? Tell us more
When I’m not baking wedding cakes I also provide celebration cakes, so special birthdays, christenings, that sort of thing. It’s how I started and although my main focus is now weddings I do squeeze in a fair few celebration cakes too!
What have you got planned for the next 12 months?
To grow my business even further, to gain more experience and skills. I’m mainly self-taught but I’ve undertaken some professional training to develop my skills and I like to attend annual courses to keep on top of wedding trends – there’s always something new to learn.
And finally, what or who inspires you and why?
There’s so many talented cake artists I look up to and also other wedding supplier professionals. It would be hard to give a full list but I love Cottons and Crumbs, Heledd Roberts Photography, Jade Leung Styling.
Fashion inspires me a lot such as wedding dresses, table scapes and of course fresh flowers are a constant source of inspiration. Anyone who knows me well knows I have a bit of an addiction to David Austin roses, I love them and I love to recreate them within my designs.
