Over to Grace now to tell us more.
Tell us a little about yourself and your business
We are Mat Ruttle and Grace Rowe. We are a husband and wife team mixing business with pleasure as well as mixing amazing coffee based cocktails!
We have a Mobile Espresso Van and a pop up bar from which we serve the finest, speciality coffee and espresso martinis. Espresso Martinis are the perfect cocktail to get your wedding started and keep your guests perked up for the dance floor!
What motivated you to start your business?
We are both actors and met whilst performing in a West End Show. Like most actors, we found ourselves out of work as much as we were in work so inevitably turned our hands to other sources of income to pay the bills. Mat worked as a barista and developed a love of coffee which developed from a day job in to a genuine passion.
It made perfect sense to use both our barista skills and the communication skills that a career in performance gives you to start a business that would provide us with some stability and that we genuinely love doing.
Tell us a little more about the day to day activities of your business
We have a converted Aixam Mega Van equipped with the finest Astoria Lever Espresso Machine which we use on a daily basis at Lea Bridge Station in East London. We serve speciality coffee sourced by The Roasting Shed in Hackney to the morning commuters (espresso martinis are a bit too strong for this time of day!) and do private hire for events and film locations.
On weekends and certain weekdays, we swap the station for weddings and parties where we serve delicious Espresso Martinis and other coffee based cocktails (including the Espresso Negroni).
If our readers were to order from you, what can they expect?
Our guests can expect service and ingredients of the highest quality. We source the best coffee and process it using the finest equipment. Coming from a performance background we know when to put on a show! So communication is key when it comes to being the best barista and mixologist.
How can couples judge if a company is the right fit for their wedding?
Style is important and the sort of couple that appreciates speciality coffee normally appreciates the finer things in all aspects of life. That’s why we style our van or pop-up bar to match the style of our clientele. Tea and coffee provided post meal at most weddings serves a purpose but let’s face it, it’s rarely a topic of conversation and the choices are limited.
Likewise with the Espresso Martinis; wedding bar companies are great but they don’t have time during service to make a superior tasting cocktail. If you are using our biodegradable coffee cups we can provide a personalised stamp to brand the names of the bride and groom which makes for great photo opportunities.
What are your favourite moments from previous weddings you’ve been involved with?
We did a wedding last year for a lovely couple from Oxfordshire. The bride had hired us secretly as a surprise gift for her groom as his favourite drink was an Espresso Martini.
We waited around the corner during the speeches and then drove past on cue with the Grooms Father in the passenger seat. It got a raucous cheer and the martinis went down a treat!
The bigger picture – does your business offer goods/services outside of the wedding world? Tell us more
Being mobile, we can go pretty much anywhere, whether we drive the vehicle, tow it or set up a pop up bar. We also offer our services to private events and parties and do the odd film location when the director desires a finer cup of coffee!
What have you got planned for the next 12 months?
We have started offering our home roasted beans as coffee favours to add to our wedding packages. We either pre-grind them or serve them whole in sealed pouches. We then stamp them with a personalised logo or message and tag them as place names.
They’re often accompanied by a little ditty such as… “May this day be filled with joy and laughter, here’s a little something for the morning after”. It’s a great way of making the table favour functional and personal. We’d like to expand our roasting operation and hopefully push the favours over the next year.
And finally, what or who inspires you and why?
We are inspired by trying and experiencing new things. We love to travel and every time we visit a new place, meet new people and try new food, we come back inspired and buzzing.
We try to feed this back in to the business and help to grow the quality of our products. Last year we went to Bali where their coffee culture is heavily influenced by Australia and New Zealand. We came back having tried coffee we’d never have tried elsewhere and this inspired us and helps us to inspire our customers too.
