Tell us a little about yourself and your business
Rulebook-free means throwing the traditional wedding rulebook out of the window or at least gently folding it in half. We encourage couples to think about what they want on their day and not to just blindly follow traditions like receiving lines, cake cutting or throwing the bouquet if they don’t want to. It also means putting the couple’s personality front and centre on the day so it’s different to everyone else’s wedding.
We produce imaginative, made-to-order weddings with a personal touch. For us, wedding planning is not just clipboards and time-keeping – we have our finger on the pulse of what’s new and next in events. We’re passionate about giving our brides and grooms a stress-free wedding planning experience to create a day they will never forget.
What motivated you to start your business?
We came into the business in very different ways. Holly decided she wanted to be a wedding planner when she was 6 and was well known for being the go to playground wedding planner! She interned with a wedding planner in North London when she was 16 and started planning on her own when she was 19 and then began building her own business.
Susannah took a different path and spent 10 years in PR and events working for big London agencies creating events and campaigns for UK and global brands before jumping ship to weddings when she realised that it just wasn’t fulfilling her anymore. She fell in love with Holly’s work, asked if she could shadow her for a summer. We clicked and a beautiful partnership was formed.
Tell us a little more about the day to day activities of your business
Every day is different, sometimes we’re meeting new venues and suppliers, other days we’re creating bespoke wedding designs for our couples and other days we could be handling wedmin for a couple or problem solving an issue that’s cropped up during the planning process.
What we enjoy is the variety. Each one of our couples is different and so every wedding we work on is different which is why our portfolio is so varied.
If our readers were to order from you, what can they expect?
Creativity, organisation, flexibility and a friendly attitude. We can be working with you for up to 18 months so its really important that you not only feel confident in our capabilities as wedding planners but also comfortable with us as people.
We also like to bring something new to each wedding. We don’t conform to formulas and just stick to what we know. We what your wedding to be about you so we look for new and interesting ways to do that.
How can couples judge if a company is the right fit for their wedding?
If we’re honest its probably a gut feeling. Of course you can (and should) ask lots of questions to check any planner’s credibility and experience but it really comes down to whether you feel that click between you. That’s when you know you’ve found your planner.
What are your favourite moments from previous weddings you’ve been involved with?
Lots of lovely ones – an amazing Florence wedding with the best wedding band we’ve seen, a three day event of games and fun in Somerset, a woodland wedding with the bride’s horse as a special guest. We could go on.
The bigger picture – does your business offer goods/services outside of the wedding world? Tell us more
Yes, we also organise parties, everything from birthdays to anniversaries.
Last year we also organised our first wedding show – Unruly. This was born out of a boredom of the average wedding fair format we’ve seen. We thought brides, grooms and suppliers deserve better than ‘a sea of trestle tables’ in a church hall or conference centre.
It was time for a refresh so we decided if you want a job doing well then do it yourself! Year one was a great success so we’re starting plans for year two. If any suppliers want to be involved they can apply online
What have you got planned for the next 12 months?
More weddings with Revelry Events as the company grows. We’re already working on Unruly 2018 and we’ve got a few other things up our sleeves but we’re keeping them to ourselves for now!
And finally, what or who inspires you and why?
Ooh lots of things. We’re both inspired by other women that are excelling in their field. Susannah thinks Deborah Meaden is a brilliant business woman, whereas Holly looks up to Michelle Obama.
We’re both ambitious and love working for ourselves which is a driving factor to keep growing the company and pushing ourselves out of our comfort zone like we did with our Unruly event.
