We’re so pleased to bring you ‘When Doves Cry’ – a mystical, mythical fantasy photo shoot, primarily a collaboration between Jan Knibbs, owner of Atelier 19, who we’ve had the pleasure of featuring on the blog, and photographer Su Barclay.
The shoot took place soon after Jan opened her sumptuous concept boutique Atelier 19 in the artisan quarter of Cheltenham, with the ruined church of St Mary the Virgin in Monmouthshire acting as a spookily romantic theatrical backdrop.
Regular readers will recognise Jan’s style instantly, as it offers brides, the opportunity to choose either a single item or a whole wedding outfit with a real bohemian, fairy tale feel. Sensuous fabrics, vintage inspired detailing and intricate embroidery all feature in this shoot and are the hallmarks of Jan’s work that we admire so much. Over to Jan now to tell us more.
What was the inspiration for the shoot?
The inspiration for it was really to promote as many small creative wedding businesses as possible and to inject a bit of variety and intrigue into styled photography. I had just opened Atelier 19 so Su was very keen to help promote my designs and we both love a bit of quirkiness.
Where and when did the shoot take place? Can you tell us anything further about the location?
Su found the location near Tintern Abbey in the form of a derelict chapel called St Mary the Virgin which was really in the middle of nowhere and overgrown with brambles.
Describe the style of the shoot. Was there a specific theme
The style of the shoot was quite mythical and fantasy/vintage inspired and turned into a theatrical extravaganza with the addition of the doves and bagpipes.
What was the main focus of the shoot? What were you promoting?
The main focus for the shoot was to bring together small, creative businesses offering something different and a bit quirky.
What were the highlights from the shoot?
The highlight was the great team work. It was very challenging and required a lot of effort on everyone’s part. On the day of the shoot it was freezing cold but everyone was really amazing and nobody complained. There was a real sense of everyone pulling together with mutual respect and unity.
