Tell us a little about yourself and your business
My name’s Jenni – Captain of The Craft Fantastic! I specialise is origami and papercraft flowers for weddings and special occasions: bouquets, buttonholes, table decorations, headdresses and more. I also make hand-bound guest books, all of which can be personalised.
What motivated you to start your business?
I’ve always loved being creative and paper is my favourite medium. The first wedding I did was for a friend; I offered to make her origami bouquets, which I’d never done before.
I soon realised how much I loved working with my hands, learning new techniques and being creative. After a change in direction at the company I was working for, I decided to take the plunge and start up my own handmade business. So, at the start of 2016, The Craft Fantastic set sail on its adventure!
Tell us a little more about the day to day activities of your business
If I’m working on a full wedding, I’ll have a sort of one person production line set up when doing bouquets: cutting the squares, folding and gluing the petals, then assembling the paper flowers. I’ll send occasional updates to the bride to check they’re happy.
If our readers were to order from you, what can they expect?
Getting what the customer wants is my top priority. I love trying to find the right papers to match the colour scheme; it’s often challenging but I haven’t failed yet!
How can couples judge if a company is the right fit for their wedding?
Are you after something a bit different? Paper flowers are a great alternative, beautiful, versatile and lasting. I find that a lot of my brides are very creative and often have an idea in mind that they want me to create for them.
You can visit The Craft Fantastic to get some inspiration on the kind of things I can offer.
What are your favourite moments from previous weddings you’ve been involved with?
I’m working on a wedding at the moment where the bride is looking for burnt orange paper. The shade proved difficult to find but eventually I managed to get some samples to her that I thought were suitable. I was so happy when I got an email to say she loved the shades I’d found!
The bigger picture – does your business offer goods/services outside of the wedding world? Tell us more
I have a shop on Etsy selling hand-bound notebooks, journals and sketchbooks, plus a range of miniature book necklaces.
What have you got planned for 2017?
I’m fully booked for summer, but still have space for autumn/winter 2017 and of course 2018 weddings! I’ll also be expanding on my new range of headdresses.
And finally, what or who inspires you and why?
I’m inspired by different coloured, textured and patterned paper. Looking round paper stores is my idea of heaven! There’s just something about how versatile paper is, the way I can take a flat sheet and transform it into a beautiful flower.
