Tell us a little about yourself and your business
Spook are a luxury event caterer based out of Bermondsey in London. We cater for all events from brand press days and corporate dinners to extravagant private parties and our favourite events, gorgeous country weddings! We focus on the highest quality, seasonal ingredients which our amazing chef team turn into indulgent yet fresh tasting dishes.
Weddings are so individual to each and every couple and our menus reflect this providing the option of sharing feasts, summer salads, decadent three course meals, food trucks, dessert stations and much much more, even. We love creating exquisite wedding menus for our clients and seeing their visions come to life.
What motivated you to start your business?
After working in the catering business as a chef I saw so many events done half-heartedly using below par elements and uninspiring menus and I knew that I could do it better and offer clients a service that would have guests talking for months about how amazing the food was!
Tell us a little more about the day to day activities of your business.
Our day-to-day is crammed packed with everything from meetings with clients, discussing new menu developments with the kitchen team, tastings for upcoming weddings and events, talking with potential clients about their upcoming requirements, packing for events, organising all the elements that bring an wedding together such as hire, staff, drinks and any those bespoke special requests.
It is communication and the whole team working together to ensure that our weddings are always of the highest quality and are run smoothly on the day.
If our readers were to order from you, what can they expect?
We focus on our clients and their weddings individually so each couple can expect a tailored, bespoke service for their big day. We know what is important to our couples and have been doing this for enough time to know how to support our clients and represent their visions and ideas into our food.
We believe weddings should be nothing but enjoyable for the happy couple and their guests so we aim to take all the stress out of the catering aspect of the day. We provide a full service including cocktail bars, table styling, menu design and staffing as well as providing access to a hand-picked list of suppliers for flowers, marquees, lighting specialists and many more.
As part of their booking with Spook there will be appointed an Events Manager to oversee their entire booking, a tasting to help decide on their perfect menu, plenty of experience and support and on the day a magical day filled with delicious food and drink to keep their guests happy.
How can couples judge if a company is the right fit for their wedding?
At Spook believe it is down to two very important factors. The first is to look for a catering company that offer menus that fit with the vibe of your big day. If you are dreaming of a relaxed, family orientated wedding then a fine dining specialist is probably not going to be suited to your vision.
The second is the people. You will be working closely with the planning team at the caterer so you need to get on with them, and you need to feel relaxed when discussing the logistics, the menus, the decoration and on site. The last thing a couple wants is to be feeling tense when discussing one of the biggest elements of the wedding reception.
What are your favourite moments from previous weddings you’ve been involved with?
The best part of each and every wedding is that initial canapé reception when guests come out of the ceremony. They pour out, elated, they grab a cocktail and get that first taste of what we are serving for the day. They then start to get excited for what’s to come!
Serving a feasting wedding breakfast is always great (and very popular now) seeing the guests get stuck into the food, chatting about it as it’s served and asking for more is always great to see! We also love it when guests ask us about the food – when they haven’t tried something before and want to know more or ask where we get our food from. It is a huge compliment to us and our suppliers.
The bigger picture – does your business offer goods/services outside of the wedding world? Tell us more.
We work with event planners, luxury brands and private clients all over the UK working with companies such as Lillingston and Quintessentially to provide epic event catering. We cater events with all sorts of requests from ice sculptures, wacky themes, amazing cocktail bars and even 4-day birthday parties on private islands.
We cater for almost any event and our chefs thrive on getting in an event that is a little “out there” and coming up with a bespoke menu fit to our client’s requirements. Spook also host Pop-up restaurants and networking events where we invite the public and people in the industry to sample our new menus.
What have you got planned for 2017?
2017 is looking like a big year for Spook with the wedding season in full swing from May and running through to September. We are working with more and more wedding and event planners and curating some epic events this year in some amazing venues!
We are focusing on expanding our offering, scouting out some new suppliers and venues we want to work with. We are looking for like-minded brands to work with who have a similar style to ours.
And finally, what or who inspires you and why?
There are so many amazing brands and companies out there that it is hard to pick a specific inspiration however we at Spook love those who have an invested interest in what they are doing that it is more to them than just making money. Those who are taking something such as a restaurant and turning it into something more meaningful like Chef Dan Barber who is developing the idea of sustainable food production and putting it into practise in the industry.
It is also great to see brands such as Soho House developing a USP and sticking to it, being strong about who they are and what they represent, grow that idea and expand quickly and making it attainable.
Spook focus on using local suppliers and only using seasonal ingredients so others in the industry that focus on the same for their menus are companies that we look to for inspiration.
