Tell us a little about yourself and your business
Hi, I’m a female lifestyle photographer called Jenny Beckett, but you can call me JB and JB Moments Photography is my dream job!
What motivated you to start your business?
Due to some unfortunate circumstances, I hardly have any photographs of my childhood or my parents’ heritage and that started a lifelong obsession with documenting my family’s life and ensuring it is preserved for the next generation. From my first point and shoot camera – when I was about 8 – to the gorgeous state of the art Canon beast I currently have, I have always taken pride in seeing my work on family and friends’ walls.
For twenty years I worked full time as a banker (please don’t hate me), and pursued my photography passion on the side, but doing something you love isn’t work, right? So I took the decision to start JB Moments Photography and haven’t looked back since! I still pinch myself when I realise that snuggling new borns, acting silly with kids and floofing wedding dresses is my actual job.
My style is relaxed and fun. I love natural light and natural poses that flatter my subject, although I may occasionally need to flash you!
When I’m not working I’m likely to be spending time with my husband (another JB) and our two Frenchies, Bert and Ernie, or cooking up a storm for our family and friends. I also love going to live gigs and the ballet (watching not doing). I’m also known to make a mean cocktail.
Tell us a little more about the day to day activities of your business
If I don’t have a shoot my day starts by walking Bert and Ernie. Then it’s emails, social media and training (I believe it’s important to continue to learn everyday). Usually I will have some editing and post production to do as well and that is where I get my geek on!
I love creating magic in Adobe Lightroom and Photoshop. If I have a wedding coming up then it is important to meet with clients and make sure we are all on the same page about what moments they want capturing.
I also like to visit all the locations I will be shooting at, especially if I haven’t photographed there before. That means on the day I have a great idea of where we can get some cool pictures and get the happy couple back to their guests and their party as quickly as possible.
If our readers were to order from you, what can they expect?
A good time (that sounded better in my head!!) I believe in making the experience as good fun and stress-free for the couple as possible. The more relaxed they are the better the pictures. I also want to make sure all the wedding party enjoy the wedding photo experience rather than a chore they have to go through!
I will fight for the right light and a striking picture but not at the expense of the couple’s enjoyment. I used to hate being a guest at weddings when you would be starving, waiting for the reception but the photographer was whisking the couple away for ‘just one more picture’.
I believe beautiful moments can be captured efficiently before the smile wears off and in plenty of time for the happy couple to enjoy some of the reception they have paid a fortune for!
How can couples judge if a company is the right fit for their wedding?
By meeting with them and seeing if they get on/get a good feel. Most suppliers will offer no obligation chats (I certainly do – I love hearing about wedding plans and how couples met). The photographer, especially, will usually be with you from morning prep until first dances.
No other supplier is with you that long so it’s important you don’t hate them!! Also sticking with photography (‘cos it’s kinda my thang!!) think about having an engagement photo session (or pre-wedding session), especially if you hate getting your picture taken.
That way you are much more relaxed on the big day itself. As a bonus, these sessions often make some great images to use for “save the date” cards or social media posts 🙂
What are your favourite moments from previous weddings you’ve been involved with?
Oh that’s tough because every wedding is beautiful in it’s own way and everyone is unique. I love weddings that have personal readings from family or friends and I love it when cute kids or animals are part of the wedding party. They are so unpredictable and often amongst the wonderful chaos produce some of the best images from the day.
My favourite part of a wedding is probably the speeches though, the good, the bad and the downright ugly – I love em all!
The bigger picture – does your business offer goods/services outside of the wedding world? Tell us more
I also go out on location for family photo sessions and engagement sessions.
What have you got planned for the next 12 months?
My business only started full time in June this year so I’m planning to continue to spread the word! One of my weddings was recently featured in Tie the Knot Scotland (Set/Oct edition) and another on their website so I am hoping more of my weddings get featured in publications.
I also have a whole raft of mini sessions for kids planned in my studio starting with Halloween Mini Sessions, then Christmas, Valentines, Mothers Day, May the Fourth, etc etc – Anyone interested should like my Facebook Business Page @JBMoments for details!!
And finally, what or who inspires you and why?
Burk Uzzle (great name) said “Photography is a love affair with life” and I love that!! Photographers like Jasmine Star and Julia Kelleher also inspire me, not just for their amazing photography but for being successful business woman and always happy to share their knowledge.
On a personal level my 11 year old nephew inspires me, he was diagnosed with the developmental disability Autism when he was 2 years old and the way he makes sense of the world and copes with things that overwhelm him is just…wow…his bravery astounds me.
