Sarah is the owner of farm, a wedding styling company offering bespoke, individual styling of your big day. Sarah draws upon her extensive interiors and styling background to interpret your ideas and turn them into your dream day. Here’s how Sarah describes her fascinating work.
Tell us a little about yourself and your business
My name is Sarah, and my company is called Farm. In 2013 I returned to my beloved Yorkshire after living and working in Canada and France.
For the last fifteen years I’ve worked for myself in the realm of interiors, renovation and styling. On relocating back to the UK I was ready for a fresh challenge. I suppose you could say I sort of fell into the world of wedding styling & flowers. In 2014 I was asked to style a home prior to launch as a new venue, then asked to stay on and style the launch and from there to become a preferred supplier. The rest, I suppose you could say, is history. And I absolutely love it!In the last three years I’ve grown the business from simply prop hire and marquee styling into a one-stop-shop curated design house which provides a cohesive look for your wedding and event providing planning, styling, props, custom design and florals.
What motivated you to start your business?
My parents have always renovated properties and when I was 11 they bought a Georgian house and turned it into a successful wedding venue. So I suppose the two things go hand in hand for me. It’s easy to see why my background in interiors evolved and the natural leap into the wedding world.
Tell us a little more about the day to day activities of your business
On a day to day basis the work varies. Today for example I’m in the office all day, I have contracts to write, quotes to send out and – woe is me – some book keeping. But the week gets more interesting as it goes along. Tomorrow I am putting together some designs for the weekend and ordering flowers, Wednesday will be starting to prep those designs, Thursday I’m working with another new venue to get them up and running, from both a styling perspective and an administrative role and Friday it’s back to finishing those designs in time for the weekend.
Saturday is a local fair and I’m selling decorative spring wreaths as a fund raiser. Next week will be entirely different. Some weeks it’s all office bound, others I work through the night to ensure that we can deliver a project. But this keeps it all fresh and exciting, I love the variety (ok, so not so much the book keeping).
If our readers were to order from you, what can they expect?
I love the work I do, and I’m a bit of a perfectionist when it comes to how things look. When I’m working with a couple, I like to get everything fine tuned. I like to draw my quotes, send lots of doodles, pins and emails. Because I want them to walk into that wedding and say oh my god, it’s exactly as we imagined it.
How can couples judge if a company is the right fit for their wedding?
I would say the most important thing, for me at least, is face to face contact. You need to have a great supplier/client relationship and feel able to build mutual trust. But it doesn’t harm to do your homework before you look for suppliers.
Check out their social media accounts and their websites. Look at where they work, look at feedback, do you like their particular style. If this works for you then get in touch. And don’t be afraid to meet them. If it’s not a right fit nothing has been lost.
What are your favourite moments from previous weddings you’ve been involved with?
The smiles, every time. It’s such a happy happy time and people are always so generous with their thanks and praises. You’ve helped them recreate their dream wedding after all. But also the self satisfaction. There is nothing more amazing that sitting back and looking at everything you’ve achieved and knowing in doing so you’ve made somebody incredibly happy.
The bigger picture – does your business offer goods/services outside of the wedding world? Tell us more.
We do! My partner and father in law both make furniture, and I’ve been known to knock up the odd cabinet too. We make beautiful tables and benches, lamps, boards, doors etc from reclaimed timber. I also make signs – which is super helpful in the wedding world.
What have you got planned for 2017?
2017 is my second year as a fully established wedding supplier. So I’m pushing all the boundaries. The first quarter was photo-shoots and I’m literally aching to share those photos, alas we must wait for publication! My goal this month is to set up my new blog. I’ve written before and it’s something I’ve been meaning to do and I’m so looking forward to it.
But mostly, I’m super excited about this years weddings, we have a huge variety in styles and venues which allows me to stretch all my creative muscles. I’ve built up a team to work with during the summer months and it feels great to be moving forward and see the business grow.
And finally, what or who inspires you and why?
My family, first and foremost. I want to be a strong role model for my children, I want them to see that women in the workplace can knock it out of the park AND have a family.
Business wise, I’d have to say there are a few local suppliers I work with, and without naming names, I’d be lost without their help, advice and mentorship.
